Taco Mesa

Taco Mesa is a small chain of taco joints. They do the CA authentic - healthy - mexican - with - a - few - quirks thing well. They have a calimari taco which gets more points for creativity than it does for flavor. The fish burrito though is not bad, and the more conventional features are all well done. They throw in a few more Mexican touches like several aguas frescas and Tecate.

Mexico City

The Condesa neighborhood is a great place to go for dinner, lots of cafes, a nice relaxed atmosphere. A little pricy for el DF but hey, a little pricy here is still cheap by American standards. Just stroll down Tamaulipas or Nuevo Leon (Patriotismo Metro stop).

50 Friends

Tamaulipas (don't remember the #, North of Patriotismo Metro stop)

Per recommendation of the Mexico City Bureau, I tried this place. After having Mexican food for about a week I was ready for something else. The pizza was OK, but the vibe was great. The waiter could not explain to me though why the name is "50 friends" in English.

Zona Rosa is one of the hubs for nightclubs so stuff is open late. I loved this little taqueria. No frills, but really good tacos, por poco pesos. And in case this is your first meal in Mexico, tacos are this - several small corn tortillas on a plate underneath a pile of (your choice of) meat. The other popular item is the torta: meat on a french roll. And don't fall for the "fee" for using the sink.

Cafe Popular, near the Zocalo is a solid, cramped breakfast spot. I had some eggs and salsa dish with a side of beans. It was cheap and tasty and (as often happens) I had live music with my breakfast thanks to a traveling corrido man.
